What is a wedding celebrant?

Since the recent changes in Jersey’s legislation, you now have a great deal more choice about your wedding. You may now be legally married virtually wherever you want in Jersey, including outside, subject to the Superintendent Registrar’s approval of your venue (if it isn’t already approved).

The new legislation also introduced the role of Authorised Civil Celebrant; these are marriage celebrants who are authorised to marry people in Jersey and are included on the list held by the Superintendent Registrar. Marriage celebrants are self-employed but registered and authorised by the Superintendent Registrar.

The list includes a variety of marriage celebrants; some have undertaken formal training as a professional celebrant, some have experience in officiating at weddings (as happens if you get married at the office of the Superintendent Registrar). Some are able to provide a Humanist wedding and some offer other services such as naming ceremonies (instead of a religious Christening), funerals and other milestone ceremonies, some offer additional wedding services such as wedding planning.

Just as every wedding is different, we are all different. Couples sometimes have an idea of what they want their wedding to be like; others really don’t know what is possible and seek advice, guidance and inspiration.

Some couples just want to become legally married, without any additional ceremony; they want a simple marriage licence signing and solemnising of their marriage. This can be a simple and beautiful affair and can take place at the office of the Superintendent Registrar or at any approved venue. All Authorised Civil Celebrants can provide a simple marriage service and several are very experienced in that area.

Some couples want more than that; they want a personal celebration in addition to being married and working with a celebrant who can create bespoke and custom ceremonies can make sure that your wedding ceremony is a personal celebration of your commitment to each other.

Why choose a bespoke ceremony?

Celebrants who specialise in bespoke and custom wedding ceremonies write the entire wording for the ceremony in partnership with you and will work together to create a highly personal ceremony that reflects your personalities, characters, your ideals and wishes for the future.

To do this they really get to know you as a couple.

You will get a ceremony, which is unique to you and your partner. Created with you and for you, it will reflect and portray who you both are and your hopes and dreams of your life together. It will be totally unique and will be something you can cherish and remember forever.

A celebrant who specialises in bespoke ceremonies will be a professional who is full of great advice about what you can include in your ceremony and how you can do it. They usually have a network of other professional celebrants they can consult if you want to include something unusual, such as a Gothic theme. They tend to be a living ceremony encyclopaedia and reference book combined!

As a celebrant who specialises in bespoke ceremonies, I often feel as if I am conducting a ceremony for friends, not clients. This is because we build a close relationship, meeting together, talking and exploring ideas. That connection is at the core of a bespoke ceremony. We get to know each other, go on a journey together as we create ways of expressing your wishes and feelings in words that only get said once, but last a lifetime.

I love a love story; I love hearing it, writing it and telling it. I have a toolkit which includes the ability to really listen, encompasses empathy and love, and just a little bit of fairy dust to make your ceremony truly magical.
